Transplantation of Human Fetal Retinal Pigment Epithelium Rescues Photoreceptor Cells From Degeneration
نویسندگان
چکیده
Purpose. The Royal College of Surgeons (RCS) rat suffers from a well-characterized, earlyonset, and relentless form of photoreceptor cell degeneration. It has been shown that allografts of retinal pigment epithelial cells from normal perinatal rats have rescue effects in this condition. In preparation for human application, the authors determined whether human fetal retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) grafts have a photoreceptor rescue effect in RCS dystrophic rat retinas.

Morphological changes in injured retinal pigment epithelium and photoreceptor cells after transplantation of stem cells into subretinal space
Introduction: Degenerative retinal diseases are main cause of irreversible blindness. Stem cells therapy is a promising way in these diseases. Therefore, mesenchymal stem cells because of its safety can produce degenerated cells and can play important role in treatment. The aim of this study was to examine morphological changes in injured retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) and photoreceptor cells...

The Royal College of Surgeons (RCS) rat is an animal model for retinal degeneration such as the age-related macular degeneration. The RCS rat undergoes a progressive retinal degeneration during the early postnatal period. A potential treatment to prevent this retinal degeneration is the transplantation into the subretinal space of cells that would replace functions of the degenerating retinal p...
متن کاملGeneration of retinal pigment epithelial cells from small molecules and OCT4 reprogrammed human induced pluripotent stem cells.
Autologous retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) grafts derived from induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) may be used to cure blinding diseases in which RPE dysfunction results in photoreceptor degeneration. Four-, two-, and one-factor-derived iPSCs (4F-, 2F-, and 1F-iPSCs, respectively) were differentiated into fully functional cuboidal pigmented cells in polarized monolayers that express RPE-spe...
متن کامل[Autologous transplantation of retinal pigment epithelium in age related macular degeneration].
Retinal pigment epithelial dysfunction is believed to be the main cause of many debilitating retinal diseases of which age-related macular degeneration is the most common. In this disease, the retinal pigment epithelial dysfunction leads to photoreceptors damage causing severe vision loss. The retinal pigment epithelium and Bruch's membrane suffer cumulative damage over lifetime, which is thoug...
